BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY

When Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg huffed off the stage of their own program, it made news.  It was the flounce heard round the TV world.  Their guest, Bill O'Reilly, had just made a statement with which they vehemently disagreed.  Some thought their hissy fit was contrived drama.  Nah.  I think they both hate O'Reilly enough to do it for real.  So what did the man say?

O'Reilly was explaining a point he made about why the President was declining in the polls....and in the process, he used the words "...and when the Muslims attacked us on 9/11...".  That was when the fur flew.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp891YJw_VY

The women of political correctness thought he should have been more explicit.  "It was Muslim extremists, not Muslims!" they cried.  Things escalated.  O'Reilly said if anyone had misunderstood what he said, he was sorry.  But they felt he made the remark on purpose.  Whoopi later went on to say "was he talking about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?  He's a Muslim.  O'Reilly should have been more specific."

Do you know anyone who is afraid of a basketball player?  "Me eever" (as Nate would say).  But a case COULD be made for fear of other Muslims.  Were the ladies saying that we should step carefully because Muslims might be the recipient of backlash?  Perhaps, but it would seem logical that such a backlash would have happened right after 9/11.  I think most Americans understand who to fear.

If Muslims were just a religious choice, they might be less pervasive.  But they are a system reaching all of society. Government and laws and education and the church and all the ways Muslims live their lives flow from the same polluted head waters.  The Muslims who came to America have tasted freedom and might have a different take on their law.

But in Joy and Whoopi's world, our freedom is called on to parse words in order to avoid calling a problem...a problem.  Their politically correct world has a lot to ignore to hold to that tenant.  They ignore the fact that the Muslim nation of Iran is close to having a nuclear bomb for our harm, and also funds terrorist training and arms to be used against us.  Saudi Arabia, also a Muslim nation, sponsors terror and sent us the 9/11 terrorists.  Pakistan, a Muslim nation, pretends friendship while probably harboring Bin Laden and also supporting terrorism.  These are just three nations that are Muslim nations (not just Muslim extremists) who actively seek our demise.  What worldview misses this?

I guess the ladies of the View could go over to Europe and ask Angela Merkel whether she has trouble with Muslims in Germany.   http://www.news.com.au/world/german-chancellor-angela-merkels-christian-democrat-unions-websites-hacked/story-fn6sb9br-1225940962294
Or they could go to France or Great Britain and see what the French/Brits would say...

Joy and Whoopi defend the rights of Muslims as though such defense is a righteous act.  Don't miss the wild irony of such a position.  If they were Muslim women in a strict Muslim nation, they would be burka-clad (no more high heels, Joy...or outlandish outfits, Whoopi).  They would be married as a pre-teen and not allowed out of the house alone and CERTAINLY not be listened to.  If this were not so sad for women around the world, it would be hilarious.

All around the globe, there are problems with terrorism and the word "Muslim" is closely associated.  So let's not take our eye off the ball.  It is problematic to think that America has redefined the war on terrorism with a vanilla term "overseas contingency operation".  And it is problematic that in an exaggerated effort to appear righteous, some would put our country in more danger than she's in.

Juan Williams felt the sting of that "correctness" this week.  I like Juan because he is reasonable and fair-minded.  I don't agree with his positions, but I sure wouldn't FIRE him!
NPR kicked him to the curb because of remarks Juan made about Muslims.  I heard him say the remarks.  He spoke honestly and totally without mean-spiritedness.  That man doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in his body.

We have been given a wonderful gift of freedom in our country.  Speech is protected and sometimes that protection comes back to bite us.  We have weathered many bedbugs
that would hide under that freedom-of-speech blanket.  Pornography, that Westboro church-that's-not-a-church, and race hustlers come immediately to mind.  But those speech abusers feed off the old-fashioned twins, greed and power.

This is different.  One Muslim, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, believes it is his God-given mission in life to destroy Judeo-Christian civilization.  And that destruction begins with intimidation and the diminishing of our freedom of speech.  We just need to discern who is on his side...

THE REST OF THE STORY

During WW2, a man named Paul Harvey began adding human interest stories to his newscast. ABC later picked up his radio program "The Rest of the Story". What a wonderful man! I loved this storyteller who liked to carry his audience to a surprise ending. I was one of his listeners who enjoyed being carried along.

In this 2002 picture, Mr. Harvey is presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Here is a link to a few of his choice comments:

Mr. Harvey worked until the week before he died (in 2009 at the age of 90), but I can still hear the sound of his voice and feel comfortable as I wait for those predictable words..."and now you know the REST of the story"!

Children must have felt a similar level of soothing when Fred Rogers zipped his cardigan and sang about his neighborhood. Each of Mr. Rogers' episodes was predictable, starting the very same way. The children could relax during Mr. Rogers' program. I can still hear this Presbyterian minister singing about how beautiful it was in his neighborhood.

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/28/arts/mister-rogers-tv-s-friend-for-children-is-dead-at-74.html?ref=fred_rogers&pagewanted=1

Fred McFeely Rogers was presented a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002 for his wonderful way he led children to learn. "It is impossible to count the number of lives you have touched," President Bush told Rogers, "but you've made a huge impact on thousands and thousands of children. And there are thousands and thousands of parents and Americans who are grateful for your service to the country."

Doesn't it seem these days that we really could use a Paul Harvey or a Fred Rogers in the media? We are hungry for personalities of integrity that we can trust for truth. We need to know we are getting ALL of the story because sometimes we only hear page one of a three page story...

Congress took a vote last summer on funding for extending unemployment benefits. Democrats pushed benefits while those mean ole Republicans were the "agin'-ers". Or that was what the media reported. That was page one, but here is page two. The Republicans had voted in favor of extending the benefits when it was voted on the first time. But their stipulation was to fund with money cut elsewhere in the budget. The President agreed and it was done. But the second time the vote came up, funding was again the sticking point. The President wanted to spend negative dollars. Because the Republicans wouldn't agree, they are the adults in this issue. It was a deficit-spending issue, not a heartless issue. At some point, the deficit swamps everything else and no one will be funded.

Similarly, the funding for the 9/11 First Responders has been in the news. The Dems have been kicking that can down the road for 3.5 years. They ARE the majority and they've HAD the numbers to pass whatever they wanted. But nothing happened until all of a sudden back in February, Rep. Anthony Weiner staged a toddler meltdown on the House floor. He hollered about the awful Republicans who don't want to support our heroes. Is that right? That's what you would have thought. But something stinks if fellow Dems would not go down on paper for the proposition. That's curious...wonder why? The rest of the story involves the pork they tacked onto the hero-funding. How cheesy is that?

Today it is 21 days until the midterms. Most are battening down the hatches because the election barrage has already gotten ugly. Tell me who would want to run for office these days? Who needs that aggravation?

No wonder people are pulling out their hair. No one trusts politicians OR the media for good reason. We are desperate for honesty and integrity. We want someone who will tell us THE REST OF THE STORY.

BIRTHDAY BLESSINGS

The good Lord has given me another year...and I get to spend it. That's what I got from Him for my 63rd. I also got reminders of His love as a bunch of people called or sent cards/wishes on Facebook. I'm grateful for the kindness and thoughtfulness of friends.

Tim and Penny sent a hilarious talking card that was so them. It makes me laugh every time I hear it (and Nate wore it out). There also were sweet cards that I love to reread. Brad and Laura's card is always a stitch. But this birthday card above won the prize for capturing "me". For some unknown reason, I have a hard time hitting my mouth when I eat. My husband says it's because I'm in a hurry. I do need to wear stripes.

Mike and the kids made a birthday fuss. Each of my offspring gave me a meal cuz they know I like to go out to eat. Brad and Laura's meal came in the mail in the form of a plastic card for a pizza place that gets good marks in NW Arkansas. Brad is good about researching online for the best places and then making a call; he has New York survival skills. Matt and Beth and Nate gave me a meal at Pesto Cafe and the eggplant parmesan was a treat.

I guess sometimes birthdays give pause for reflection. This year I was needing some assurance that my course did not need correction regarding one way I spend my time. So I asked the Lord (not out loud) to confirm it in a specific way. The day went by and I had not heard a word. Nothing by bedtime. I was disappointed because I had asked in good faith and I thought because it involved His work, it was a prayer that He would surely answer. I checked the computer once more, got into bed, strapped on the CPAP machine, and took a deep breath.

On the nightstand, Precious (the iPhone) dinked. I picked it up and there...less than an hour before the next day would have begun...was my email answer! It came right on time (He's always right on time) and at a perfect time when I was quiet and more contemplative. I LOVE hearing from the Lord. It doesn't often happen that directly, but when it does...SHAZZAM!

Then, first thing the next morning another confirmation came. No one else knew what I had asked but Him. He and I understood and I waited for Him. What a wonderful birthday blessing!

Now there was ONE more birthday thingy that happened and we are all scratching our heads about this. We decided at the last minute to go to the Pesto Cafe, and we didn't know a soul in there. We ate and then the waitress appeared with two mounded plates of chocolate cake/ice cream. Nate was overjoyed! We hadn't mentioned a birthday, so we knew it wasn't from the restaurant. The waitress said "someone wanted you to have this"...but she wouldn't say who. Beth thought Mike did it. Mike thought Beth did it. Then when we really began to explore...neither of them did it. Until this moment, it remains a mystery why a stranger would send cake to our table.

Well, our lives are a journey through uncharted waters. And for a control freak (in remission, but constantly recurring) like myself, I take great comfort in knowing an omniscent and omnipotent Father who is personally involved in His children's lives.

"Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you." 1Peter 5.7 NLT

PRESIDENTIAL CHRISTIANITY

Our President was in campaign mode back in April of 08 when he let slip this famous comment about bitter clingers to guns and religion:

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,,,it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Ironic how things have a way of coming full circle. The President has surged the guns in Afghanistan and now he's talking about his religion. The cynic in me would wonder why all of a sudden, he's goin' to church and talking about his Christianity. It might be because so many people think he is a Muslim. If you lived across the street from him and watched him come out of his front door Sunday after Sunday with a golf bag over his shoulder, you might draw a different conclusion than that he is a religious man.

What's that? AHHH...the voices are hollering "don't judge!"

Well, facts are facts. And at the end of this piece, I will say that no one but God can read a man's heart. I'm not asking for that job, but I can "assess" fruit. Jesus called us to know others by their fruit. He expects us to be discerning so that we can make informed decisions.

So here's a brief fruitcheck.

1. FACT. Barack Obama has given credit for his Christianity to differing scenarios. In 2007, he said "my mother was a Christian in Kansas...I was raised by my mother and I've always been a Christian". Well, no one has "always" been a Christian, but since 2007 he gives credit to his mentor/pastor for introducing him to Christianity. In other words, he learned from Jeremiah Wright how to come to God. But in fact, what the President learned was black liberation theology. He did not learn Christianity. That statement is not judgmental, but just the way it is. Christianity is built on one foundation; black liberation theology is built on another. They do not coincide. If Barack Obama is a Christian, he has come to the Lord since his 20 years at Trinity. The hateful things that were said from the pulpit at Trinity do not come close to passing for Christ's teachings.

2. FACT. Barack Obama's first act as President was to sign abortion legislation. He bragged that would be his first act and it was accomplished on his first day. None of the Senators in Illinois or in the U.S. Senate (where he formerly worked)...voted for the most extreme part of this abortion legislation. But Barack Obama voted to withhold life-saving measures to failed abortion babies that were born alive. NO ONE but Senator Obama voted "yes" on this hideous option of a baby either being left to die alone, or be suffocated. A quick "fruit check" would not include the taking of human life, let alone make it the law of the land.

3. FACT. The President gave reasons that he chose to be a Christian. He said Jesus' principles of living (such as doing unto other and being his brother's keeper) were attractive to him. Trouble is, God gave us the procedure for coming to Him and we don't get to say how it happens. Christianity is not a buffet choice. It requires a mourning over personal sin, an acknowledgment of that sin to God, and a plea. The President may well be attracted to Christianity for the reasons he gave, but he doesn't BECOME a Christian that way.

"Doing unto others" is a phrase that Jesus spoke in Matthew and Luke. But it also is referred to other ancient civilizations who had a code of justice such as Babylonia, Persia, and China. This "doing unto others" is not unique to Christianity and does not define Christianity.

The "brother's keeper" principal seems an odd choice for the President. First, it was not something Jesus called us to do. It was an excuse the murderer Cain verbalized when he smarted off to God ("am I my brother's keeper?"). If the President wanted to show Christian charity, he HAS a half-brother he could help. The brother lives in a meager hut in Africa without electricity. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/2595688/Barack-Obama-is-my-inspiration-says-lost-brother.html

Or, President Obama could help his Atlanta aunt who has been on welfare since she came to America illegally from Kenya (receiving $700/month disability, free medical care, food stamps, and housing). She has twice been ordered to be deported, but just recently a judge gave her a "pass". So maybe President Obama has been his sister's "keeper" in getting her deportation revoked, but I wish he would give her some of his money so I wouldn't have to pay her way.

All this being said, do I know whether all this religious movement on the President's part is calculated toward winning favor with the electorate...or is a heartfelt reach toward God? Can't say. Do I know whether someone in Barack Obama's path has explained Christianity and helped him see his need of Christ? Dunno. God is good and He places people strategically for just such a purpose. I've prayed for that scenario. Maybe that HAS happened and President Obama just does not know how to verbalize his quest.

But here's where we come in. We are not called to evaluate his heart, but we are called to discern his leadership because we're on the ship with him. We are also called to use that discernment as we respond to the voting responsibilities we have as citizens.

While mankind tends to twist and turn and flip and flop...it only makes more precious the One who never changes and who is always true. El Roi is the God who sees. He knows President Obama's heart and He can be trusted to treat the president justly. All we have to do is keep an eye on the fruit...because what President Obama DOES (and not what he says) affects us.

THE EDUCATION POSER

Our President made education remarks yesterday. He spoke some true things, so why brand him a poser?

First know that these words are from a teacher who has homeschooled and also taught in public and private schools. My grandmother taught second grade in the same room for 32 years. Our daughter teaches; her husband is a principal. We have two grandchildren in the public schools. We are all about education. These remarks are not directed at education.

President Obama is on the ropes and all his poll numbers are in the tank. There is nowhere for him to go on the issues that top the list (economy/security) because he has bupkis to show there. So he fakes to the middle and picks a topic with which no one can disagree. Who would not want better schools? But things are not that simple. Consider his comments on three levels... veracity, good-for-the-goose/good-for-the-gander, and a hail mary.

VERACITY
Two years ago, this President said a lot of very reasonable things that sounded good. But even the simplest of campaign promises did not materialize. Why would we now assume he is telling the truth about education? Would it be to his advantage to deflect public attention from the top tier issues? Yes. It is less than 35 days until the midterms. Can he make a convincing case for school improvement? Of course! Many inner-city public schools are dying on the vine. Would he REALLY fire the incompetent teachers? Hmm. His biggest supporters are unions. Think the teacher unions will fawn over such ideas?

GOOD FOR THE GOOSE/GOOD FOR THE GANDER
One lady asked the President..."but what about your girls going to private schools". To be fair, there is a good case that could be made about the security of presidential daughters in public schools. Got that. But the reason that question rings true in our minds is because the President has a track record of calling the "people" to one thing while reserving another thing for himself. Such as?

We tighten our budget while the President is living large and going on six
summer vacations (plus the First Lady's nice trip to Spain).

We are invited to a job summit to help us run our businesses, while the
President runs his business with a cabinet comprised of
only 8% who have any business experience.

We are told that there is a point when we have enough money...
while his purse bulges and First Dog Bo rides a separate jet to vacation.

THE HAIL MARY
The Washington D.C. school system tried the voucher system. That system was a fair way for ANYONE to pick their schools and not be a prisoner of the public school system. But who stopped that voucher system in Washington? The ones opposing the voucher system were the same voices that continue to fund the present broken system...the President and his party and the unions. When they squashed the program, a desperate cry went up from the scholarship students who were attending the private schools. Would they have to go back to public? The President compromised and set aside money to pay their education through 12th grade. Those students squeaked through, but what about the rest of the next generation from public housing?

The voucher system would create competition. The beauty of competition is that it floats all boats. If public schools are shaken up for a while...GOOD! They will compete for survival and that will be purifying. The president could prove his words about how he cares about children.

This link says it so well...think outside the box, President Obama, and give the children a choice! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7FS5B-CynM

RALLY ROUND THE FLAG

Can you count the folks who went to Washington, D.C. on 8/28 for the Restoring Honor rally? It was a big ole bunch of tiny specks.

There have been a lot of words written about the rally. Pundits can't figure out how to assess such a turnout. They think it is Beck. Maybe.

His influence was the impetus that "turned em out". And people were grateful to him for putting it together.

The media think he's a nutcase. So what does that make his audience? No wonder they're having trouble figuring it out.

(Note: this is Glenn and Dr. Alveda King praying before the rally. She is Martin Luther King's niece; Dr. King also spoke at the rally.)

Here's what the experts aren't "getting"...

These people watch Glenn Beck's tv show. They "went to school" on his knowledge and zeal for our country's founding. It affirmed in their innermost being some things:

1. America is and has been greatly blessed. No other country on earth affords the liberty and promise that can be found here. God's people have always known that, but as Beck opened the history books and showed providence after providence...a fountain of gratitude to God was opened.

2. Our unique founding is a blessing with a responsibility. People realize that our gift of liberty is being chipped away daily. Americans are regular people with jobs and carpools and deadlines and meetings. It takes quite a bit to turn regular people with daytimers out into the streets. But they've hit the pavement now.

At the rally the participants were surrounded by examples of courageous stewardship in the presence of Lincoln and Washington and the memorials to the war dead. Whether they died in their bed or at the theatre or on foreign soil, these heroes gave their lives for their country.

The reason for the rally attendance may be that one day believers will look the Lord full in the face, and they will be sheepish about they handled their stewardship of His awesome gift of liberty.

3. America's uniqueness is a phenomenon that calls for an explanation. We know that God guided the men as they put their thoughts on paper as to how this great experiment might be accomplished.

Since then, the legislative/judicial/executive branches have been pulled and tugged on, manipulated and bloated and perverted. It doesn't work as well as it used to, but we think (in decorator terms) "the bones are there".

The people who went to the rally prayed. The wannabes who wanted to go to the rally but couldn't...prayed. So there must have been some great prayer cover over the event. I wonder what that scene looked like from heaven's side. ElRoi, the God who sees, likes it when we ask. So we've asked. Now we await His answer...

Meantime, the question of whether Beck is the "svengali of shtick" that spooks the media...remains unanswered.

Perhaps Glenn Beck is just the cohesive flame, the willing spark that ignited the populace.

I'm sure wishing that an evangelical had stepped forward to carry the banner. That's not the way things worked. A Mormon is the messenger and I don't know what to do with that.

Glenn Beck and I stand on equal ground as being made in God's image. He and I are equally given the free will to respond to God. And we've made differing choices that put us in different places.

I'm puzzled about all this. I love to listen to him because of his humor. He has that "ah shucks" boyish charm that just tickles me. I love how he stood up front at the rally and called people back to God. I love that he actually called for God's people to step up to the tithe in their local church. (THAT doesn't happen everyday.) I love that he loves his country so unabashedly. I love how he talks about his wife and children...how honestly he deals with who he "has been"...and how quickly he is moved to tears. It's easy to see the change in his life and I hear him give God credit for that change. I want VERY MUCH to think we are on the same page. I'm glad I'm not in charge of figuring out the sheep/goats thing.

So I'll hover and wait...with my antennae up for red flags. But I love ya, Glenn Beck! I'll continue to watch your program because I can learn so much about history and government.

If the Beckmeister turns a 180 and begins to run for President, I'll have to reconsider the svengali charge. Meantime, I take him at his word that he has no interest in that office.

And I'll be grateful for two collections. I like it that the rally raised $5.5 million for the Special Operations Wounded Warriors Project to send hero's kids to college. And I'm very grateful for the way Beck has collected our national thoughts and directed them toward God.

The Lord bless you, Glenn Beck.

OUR THIRTY-FIRST PRESIDENT

What do you think of when someone says President Herbert Hoover? Well, I didn't think so much because I didn't know so much. His name has always been attached to either the Depression or Hoover Dam. How exciting is that? But our recent trip to President Hoover's Presidential Library left me with some great impressions about him that I'd love to share.

Herbert Hoover was born in the small Iowa town of West Branch, a Quaker community. He spoke highly of his childhood and the first six years were carefree as he learned to know the fishing streams and developed his love of rocks.

Life took a serious turn for "Bertie" when he was 6 and pneumonia took his daddy. His mother became a Quaker minister to provide, but she died of typhoid fever when the president was 9. Bertie and his older brother and younger sister had to be split up to live with relatives. Mr. Hoover ended up being sent to Oregon on a train to live with an uncle. He traveled by himself and he was 11 years old. Imagine the relatives sewing two dimes into his coat so that he could buy food along the way.

Bertie Hoover's circumstances improved. His guardian uncle worked for a new college called Stanford where Bert worked to pay his way through school. Both the President and his older brother Theodore graduated with geology degrees from Stanford. College was also where he met the love of his life, Miss Lou Henry. After graduation, Mr. Hoover was hired as a mining engineer. He grew the mustache to look old enough for the position. The company sent him to Australia and he made them so much money, the company offered him a job in China for $10,000 a year. That was pretty good for 1899 and so he immediately cabled a proposal to Lou and she sent a one-word-answer back to him: "yes".

Miss Lou was the first woman in the geology program at Stanford. They met and realized that they had rocks and Iowa and fishing and camping in common. Lou had been born in Iowa, but she was raised in California. Her daddy was a banker who thought he was getting a boy (hence her name) and he gave her a love for the outdoors and taught her to fish and to camp. Described as "robust", she brought her adventurous spirit into their marriage. They married in 1899 and left for China the next day.
They loved their time in China...except for the part about the Boxer Rebellion. They were caught up in the seige of Tientsin and the American compound was under heavy gunfire for a month. Check out Miss Lou's fearless stance with her hand on her hip. They said she would daily sweep the porch to clear away the shell casings.

Miss Lou was already fluent in Latin (translating a geology book that still is in publication). She and her new husband both learned Chinese and even when they were in the White House, if they wanted to communicate just between themselves, they spoke Chinese. She was "Loo" and he was "Hoo".

During his career as a mining engineer, the Hoovers traveled the world and took their two boys with them. I loved one picture of her on a steamship deck with one of the boys as a toddler. She had devised a harness with a leash that she tied to the ship. She was determined her little one would not fall overboard. They lived in London and many places around the globe as his career flourished and they became millionaires.

But when WW1 broke out, Mr. Hoover left business to serve his country. There were 120,000 Americans who were stuck in Europe at the onset of war and HH was charged to organize their return. He always used volunteers, noting "Every time the government is forced to act, we lose something in self-reliance, character, and initiative."

As WW1 progressed, Belgians were starving and Mr. Hoover coordinated relief efforts. Then, when America entered the war, he encouraged people in this country to avoid eating particular foods to save them for soldiers' rations. "Hooverizing" was a term for meatless Mondays and wheatless Wednesdays.

When the Mississippi River overflowed in 1927, people asked for HH to organize relief efforts. He also served for Presidents Harding and Coolidge as Commerce Secretary. His name was a household name. When he ran for President, he was so loved that he won 60% of the vote. Seven months later, the Depression hit. His policies did not move the country as fast as they would have liked, and he lost to Roosevelt in the next election.

I had no idea what a humanitarian Herbert Hoover was. After WW2 he was back in Europe again. President Truman asked him to coordinate relief to the starving people there. The Presidential Library has a collection of things that people from all over the world have sent him in gratitude. Women took the flour sacks they received and embroidered them and sent them back to him. Children would write him poems. There is a map of the world with sheaves of wheat on each country that he served. There are 57 sheaves of wheat! I watched a video of American immigrants who had lived through the hardships of the war as children. Their testimonies were so moving. One older man with a heavy Russian accent explained through tears that he lived in an orphanage that gave only dark, moldy bread. One day he saw Mr. Hoover come with relief supplies and smelled "white bread" for the first time. Clearly, Herbert Hoover understood how an orphan felt.

I especially loved reading about the relationship between Hoo and Loo. Miss Lou married a very shy man who did not like publicity. His Quaker upbringing caused him to keep his feelings close to the vest. The public may have misread that as being "aloof". But she understood his need to be alone and together they camped and fished and enjoyed family. While they were in the White House they bought a tract of land in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia at the headwaters of the Rapidian River. They built cabins and spent time trout fishing together. When he left office they gave it to the country for successive presidents.

Herbert Hoover earned a lot of money and he gave lots of it away. He served his country without taking any pay for all those humanitarian efforts he organized; the government required that he take a salary, but he used it creatively. "I made up my mind when I entered public life that I would not make it possible for anyone ever to say that I had sought public office for the money there was in it. I therefore kept the money that came to me as salary in a separate account and distributed it where I thought it would do the most good. Part of it went to supplement the salaries of men who worked under me and whom the government paid less than I thought they were worth. Part of it went to charities."

This president was devoted to international service, wrote numerous books, and showed his heart for children by helping to organize Boys Clubs and co-founding UNICEF and CARE. He put his time and money to good use. Isn't that what true religion does? What a fine man!

I tried to think what it would be like if my life had been spent in efforts to help others...and I didn't take money for my service...and then I ended up losing my good name. How painful that must have been! The next time someone uses "Hoover" as a negative adjective, I will wince.

In the last blog, I wrote about how the Lord provides for us in our leaders. That brought to mind a time when President Hoover was a toddler. He was very sick with pneumonia...so sick that the extended family was called in to pray over him. They thought he had died and even took him to the kitchen table to lay him out and put two coins on his eyes. Then someone noticed his chest move up and down a bit. His Quaker grandmother exclaimed that God had saved Bertie Hoover for a special purpose. I don't know what you think, but I think his grandmother was right.

He was the picture of American opportunity: little Bertie Hoover, an orphan from rural Iowa...and Herbert Clark Hoover, the thirty-first President of the United States. I love this quote framed over the door of his Library...

"I have had every honor to which any man could aspire. There is no place on the whole earth except here in America where all the sons of man have this chance in life...Here alone are the open windows through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit. Here alone is human dignity not a dream, but an accomplishment. Perhaps it is not perfect, but it is more full in realization here than any other place in the world."
